Herb and vegetable seed suppliers that ship internationally to Singapore

If you are looking for exotic vegetable, herb or flower seeds that are not already available locally in Singapore, here are a few international seed suppliers that might have exactly what you are after.

Can I buy seeds from overseas to Singapore?

Can you import seeds to Singapore? Yes, however it is recommended by NParks that you get a phytosanitary certificate. Many people don’t really bother because it can be expensive, but of late some gardeners have had their seed packages redirected by SingPost and redirected to NParks and have been fined. When it comes to bringing in live plants, it is important that you know what the regulations are. See here for NPark’s regulations on bringing plants and plant products into Singapore.

Personally I have ordered from a couple of these seed suppliers, such as Baker Creek Seeds and Strictly Medicinal Seeds, and I have found them to be highly reliable sources.

Baker Creek Seeds

Australian Seed

Australian Seed stocks a large collection of native Australian plant seeds and offers a great selection of flowers, herb and vegetable seeds. There is no minimum order required when it comes to shipping, however do note that all international orders are shipped using parcel post because it offers mail tracking and insurance, shipping costs more as a result. Gardener’s Day Out at Hort Park

Two weekends ago, I attended the quarterly Gardeners’ Day Out organised by NParks, and because I’d missed the last one, I made it a point to wake up very early to make it to Hort Park for this session. I generally like my sleep ins, especially on weekends. Well, it certainly did not disappoint! I did wish I had bought more plants though!

In general, I found that plants, soil, manure and some products to be rather affordable. Gardening can become an expensive hobby once you add growing systems, composting system, seeds, pots, seaweed extract and/or fish emulsion to the equation. Heirloom and organic seeds are always more pricey. The Seeds Master had a really lovely display, and each packet of seeds was going for $6, or 5 packs for $25. I ended up buying three different packs of flower seeds, I’m obsessed with flowers at the moment. There was a bit of a lucky dip for customers, and I picked a pack of Dwarf French Bean seeds.

There was a good range of plants on sale – succulents, including cacti, orchids, pitcher plants, air plants, florals, herbs and even eggplants and mulberry. Young seedlings were also available. There were also interesting talks and workshops, but I didn’t attend any.

Note to self: cockatoos love sunflowers

My mammoth sunflowers took around 2 and a half months before opening its flower heads, but we only got to enjoy this for a little more than a week. One morning, we heard wild cockatoos squawking and congregating near our tomato beds, so I went to investigate.

What I saw was quite heartbreaking…
