Soil Workshops for Serious Gardeners

Nong (by Edible Garden City) and I are celebrating the International Year of Soils, and we have organised a few workshops in July for those who wish to delve deeper into the world of soil. The three sessions run on separate Sunday mornings for 90 minutes, and each session costs $49. There are discounts if you purchase more than one session – if you decide on all three, the bundle price is $128, and if you go for two, it will cost $88. What’s included in the ticket? Read more below to find out : )

Soil Mixing Workshop – for Serious Gardeners

Wish to learn the basics of soil and learn to make your own seed raising mix and potting mix? There are many recipes available, and it also depends on what you’re growing. Hear about the different variations of soil mixes and participate in this hands-on soil mixing workshop, where you’ll take home a sample pack of the soil mixes we prepare that day.

The cost is $49 per person, and limited spaces available, so booking is necessary. Book your spot at http://soilmix.peatix.com

Soil improvement – for Serious Gardeners

To have healthy plants, we need to ensure there are good microbes in the soil to make fertiliser nutrients available to it. During this session, find out what fertilisers and soil amendments can be used to improve soils. In addition, we will showcase some products that are available in Singapore, as well as some methods used overseas, and participants can take home a sample size portion of a few different kinds of soil amendments.

The cost is $49 per person, and limited spaces available, so booking is necessary. Book your spot at http://soil-improve.peatix.com

Soil Blocking Workshop – for Serious Gardeners

Soil blocking is not a new practice, it is common in Europe, and growing in popularity in farms overseas for its many benefits. Instead of growing in conventional seed trays, soil blocks are made with a special hand tool. Some reasons for preferring soil blocks include a lowered risk of transplant shock for plants with delicate roots, promotes healthier root systems, and results a reduction of plastic waste.

Come and experience for yourself how a proper soil block mix is prepared, and then turned into a soil block, and of course — take some for yourself to test out at home.

The cost is $49 per person, and limited spaces available, so booking is necessary. Book your spot at http://soil-blocking.peatix.com

I hope you can join us!

Announcing new workshops for January!

EFW1 Elegant floral background with green leaves .I’m really pleased to announce these two upcoming workshops on 31 January. The first is An Edible Flowers Workshop, which I first held in late November, looking at growing attractive and edible flowers, while the second is Flowers for the table – A gardening workshop, which highlights pretty and delicate cottage garden flowers that will grow in our climate.

An Edible Flowers Workshop serves as a guide to growing plants like Nasturtium, Roselle, Sunbird Sunflowers, Shungiku (Garland Chrysanthemum) and Calendula, for use in salads, tea and even as natural remedies.

Other than learning how to grow these flowers, I will cover its nutritional benefits, and also touch upon how they can be used for cooking and suggest some medicinal purposes.

As part of this 1-hour workshop, you will receive some seeds to get you started, a bag of Nong seed raising mix and an attractive self-watering pot.

Reservation is required at S$55 a head. Register here!

Garden Stories: Suekay of Urban Agriculture

Suekay

I enjoy my catch-ups with Suekay, sometimes I pop by her Bishan residence to talk about collaborations, where the garden offers a wonderful backdrop to our discussions. She lives with her in-laws, who have created a lush, pretty garden with the help of a gardener. It has quite a neat, unified, formal appearance, with mainly ornamental plants. There are plans to introduce edible plants in the near future, which is exciting to hear. As you’ll see, I couldn’t resist getting a little snap happy on the garden… It’s such a beautiful, relaxing space, I feel like I’m visiting a resort each time I go there.

I’ve known Suekay for a while now and I love her warm personality and down-to-earth approach to everything she does. She’s very driven with her online gardening supplies business, Urban Agriculture, which retails a range of gardening products including seeds, microgreen kits, fertiliser and soil enhancements. We have a working arrangement where I list seeds and worm tea on her website. On top of running Urban Agriculture, she looks after NONG (by Edible Garden City)’s retail operations.

She made a transition from the financial sector to go full-time into promoting urban farming, a profession that she finds a lot more joy and meaning in.  Here she shares her motivation on making a career switch, and her journey so far. If you find Suekay familiar, you might have seen her in a previous post on her beekeeper colleague, Thomas Lim.
